From the Poolside - Sep 11

Welcome back, a new term and hopefully by now the shock of being in back in training for the children has passed!

Today we have something for everyone, topics include Lost Kit, Saturday Swimmers, Surrey Qualifiers, Junior Cup, Invoices, Club Champs, Hosting National League at the Spectrum, Aquathon, And Finally.....

Lost Kit

This is for those who swam at GHS last night, one of the girls left her swimsuit in the changing rooms, if you have it, please let me know.

Just as a note for Wednesday parents this is one reason why it is important to get your new rota up and running ASAP. With the rota in place the changing rooms will be checked at the end of every Wednesday session and stray kit can be easily reunited with it's owners. I need two volunteers for running the rota, please step forward!

Saturday Swimmers

The return to swimming sees the Saturday teachers working to a new set of National teaching guidelines. Attached is a letter outlining some of the changes, and this link to the British Swimming site will help as well http://www.sportcentric.com/vsite/vcontent/page/custom/0,8510,5157-182326-199544-42654-269382-custom-item,00.html. If you have any other questions then please do talk to your Saturday teachers.

Whilst I am thinking about Saturday's in order to maximise the time that can be spent teaching the 3-4pm session the teachers would welcome help in getting the lane ropes out. This process has to be started whilst the 2-3pm children are still in the water and therefore it is difficult for the teachers to do this because they have to continue to watch the children. So in order to make the 3pm session start promptly, help would be appreciated with the lane ropes. Please feel free to approach the teachers on Saturday, all help will be most welcome.

Surrey Qualifiers

This term the major event for our swimmers will be the Wey Valley Club Championships. Therefore it has been decided that the only open meet recommended for this term will be the Surrey County Qualifier Meet to be held 18th/19th October 2008 at the Xcel Centre in Elmbridge. This meet is a great opportunity to gain a little experience, especially in some of the longer races, before the Club Championships as well as a chance to qualify and represent Wey Valley in the 2009 Surrey County Championships. The Surrey County Qualifier is for swimmers aged 9 or over at 1 March 2009, who have personal bests faster than the lower qualifying time (E) but not faster than the upper time (Q) in each event - please check this before requesting entry for events. The entry deadline to our event administrator (Edwina Attwood) is 19th September.

If you think you may be interested please can you urgently review the documents and information on the Wey valley web site (under Open Meets) and/or the Surrey web site: http://www.surreyswimming.org/swimming/swimming.htm to decide which events you would like to enter and return the entry form, also found on the Wey Valley web site, to Edwina Attwood with 4 per event.

Please discuss with your coach if you have any questions regarding which events to enter.

Junior Cup

This is a two round event and we swam round one last Saturday at Hart Leisure Centre in Fleet, for the record we were up against Haslemere, Hart, Guernsey (via postal), Andover and Godalming. There were some notable swims as Sharon Gourlay reported afterwards;

"I found 19 PBs on the results sheet from last night, the most noteworthy of which are below with previous times in brackets:"
Matt Cockerill 50m back 46.52 (50.80)
Alex Taylor-Rose 100m back 1.41.61 (1.52.05)
Alex Taylor Rose 100m breast 1.39.28 (2.00.85)
Alex Tanner 100m free 1.17.73 (1.23.57)
Tom Kearsey 50m free 33.81 (41.02)
Siobhan Michael 50m back 44.85 (50.93)

"I also found 1 CR:"
U12 boys 50m fly Mark Tuddenham 36.94 (previous record Nov '95 Darren Simms 39.02)

First places were recorded on the night by Mark Tuddenham, Luke Edwards and Elliott Taylor these and a solid all round performance from the rest of the team helped us to record a solid 4th place just ahead of Godalming. The second and final round is on the 18th October.

Invoices

New term, new invoice. Everyone should of by now received a copy of their invoice from our treasurer Mark Edwards. If you haven't then please check your Inbox and Spam filter and of course remit as soon as you can.

Club Champs

Preparations are well under way for this years club champs, the dates can be found on the website event schedule here /galas/schedule.pl, please put them in your diary and cross out everything else!

National League

Speedo no longer sponsor the National League so we all have to get used to not calling it the Speedo League! Anyway we are hosting a National League gala on the 11th October at the Spectrum. This is the first time that we have hosted a National League gala and we will have to pull together to get it right. I would appreciate it if people could email me if they are prepared to come down on the night and help out.

Aquathon

Had an email from Woking Swimming Club about their swim/run galas in the Woking Pool, it looks like fun and you can compete as a relay team. They are looking for Masters in particular and I was thinking that we do have some Triathlon parents in our ranks.... Anyway details can be found here http://www.wokingaquathlon.co.uk/.

And Finally....

The calendar is being worked on for 2009, wonder if the committee want to add this gala in? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-tCUnhp2bo
You have to wait 35 seconds for the serious contenders to arrive...
