Club Championships - Rules & Awards

  • Age Cup Competition:
The Age Cup Competition is designed to reward all round performance. Each swimmer has the opportunity to compete over a range of distances and in all the strokes.

    • For our youngest swimmers (U9) they compete in 5 events; 25m (free, breast, back, fly), 200m freestyle.
    • For the next age groups (U10, U11) they compete in 9 events, 25m or 50m fly respectively, 50m (free, breast, back), 25m and 200m freestyle. They also compete in their choice of 200m back or breast, and 100m and 200m Individual Medley.
    • For the older swimmers (U12, U14, U16, Open) they compete in 9 events, 100m (free, breast, back and fly), 100 and 200 Individual Medley, 25m and 200m freestyle and their choice of 200m back or breast. Note, the U12 age group swim 50m fly.
In each age group points are awarded for each event in the sequence of 1 point for 1st position through to 7 points for 7th and all lower positions. If a swimmer takes part and is disqualified for incorrect stroke technique they are awarded 8 points. If a swimmer does not take part in an event they are awarded 10 points. Swimmers who obtain the same time in an event will be placed in equal position and given equal points and all lower placed swimmers will have their positions/points adjusted accordingly. The winner of the Age Cup will be the swimmer with the fewest number of points in the Age Group after the last event has been swum. Cups are awarded to Winner and Runner Up in each Age Group. There are separate competitions for boys and girls. There are medals for each event.

Eligibility - a swimmer must be a fully paid member of the club before 1st May in the year of competition to be eligible for the Age Cups. This rule is to prevent a swimmer joining a club solely for the purpose of competing in a particular competition, winning the silver ware and leaving immediately thereafter never to be seen or heard of again! New joiners are eligible for medals and speed awards. Every swimmer taking part receives a certificate showing their achievements.

The competition is held under ASA Technical Rules and Laws with all officials being qualified for their respective roles. The decision of the referee is final. The club itself does not and cannot make decisions regarding competition results. A full set of these rules is available from the ASA website.

Age Groups - age as at 31st December in the competition year determines the Age Group of the swimmer.

  • Novice Competition:
This competition is for swimmers in the 2.30 half hour Saturday class. The class teacher decides the format of the event according to ability but usually a 25m swim, any stroke, float assisted if necessary. There are medals for each event.
  • Club Awards:
The club awards trophies to the Most Improved Boy and Girl of the year and to swimmers who have excelled in each of the strokes (not necessarily the fastest, this may be for a notable improvement during the year). The club also rewards service by any swimmer, teacher/coach or volunteer in the form of the Presidents Trophy. When making these awards the Chief Coach considers the individual's commitment to the club in the fullest sense e.g. effort, performance, team commitment, attitude, difficulty of the challenge etc. Additionally 12 swimmers are selected and awarded commendation trophies for coming to the attention of their teachers for effort, attitude and progress at any level/age during the year.
